Hiking Austria – Hiking Boots
When you go hiking in Austria, remember that the most important thing to have are comfortable hiking boots. Your feet should feel as comfortable at the end of your hike as they do at the beginning. The wrong choice can lead to aching and bruised feet. Hiking boots should be sized a little longer than your standard street shoe. Wear them together with a pair of hiking socks in order to avoid blisters. The best thing to do when choosing hiking boots is to seek advice from a shoe specialist.
Hiking Austria – Hiking Backpack
A good hiking backpack should have an internal frame, which transfers the weight of the load to your hips, adjustable shoulder straps and a well-fitted hip belt. The backpack size should match your torso length. If your are planning a day hike through the valley, a small backpack will serve the purpose as well. In any case, ask for advice at a shop specialized in hiking gear.
Hiking Austria – Water & Wind Proof Clothing
When hiking in Austria at higher elevations, you should keep in mind that air temperature drops about three degrees for every 300 metres of elevation gain. A sudden shower or low temperatures can’t do you any harm if you carry the following clothing with you:
- Fleece jacket or pullover
- Water and wind proof jacket with a high collar and a hood
- If you hike at high altitudes (2.000 metres), do not forget to carry with you a hat and a pair of gloves, as weather can change in a heartbeat and temperatures may fall rapidly.
- Water and wind proof overtrousers
Hiking Austria – Sun Blocker and First-aid Box
- High factor sun block
- Billed cap
- High quality sun glasses
- Small first-aid box
Hiking Austria – Food and Water
If you go hiking in Austria, inform yourself about mountain cottages or inns where you can have a meal. In any case, these are the things you should carry with you:
- 1 litre water bottle
- Cereals or chocolate bar
- Some fruits, e.g. apple
Hiking Austria – Hiking Map
Do not forget to carry a detailed map and route description with you when you go hiking in Austria, even if you have hiked a trail a hundred times. Inform your host about destination and duration of your mountain hiking tour. Keep in mind that cell phone service is poor or nonexistent in the mountains.
