National Park Hohe Tauern

Explore nature´s secrets when hiking in the Austrian Alps: The National Park Hohe Tauern lies in the middle of the Austrian Alps and covers an area of over 1.800 sqm. It is home to about 10.000 species of animal and one third of all plant species found in Austria. The largest national park in Central Europe and the biggest nature reserve in Austria encompasses Alpine landscapes, such as glaciers, turf and rock faces, as well as mountain pasture landscapes which have been carefully cultivated by farmers for centuries.

Hiking Austrian Alps – Hiking in a National Park

Hiking in the Austrian Alps is a unique experience: The valley of Grossarl has been part of the National Park Hohe Tauern since 1991. Ever since that time, the former mining community of Hüttschlag, located a few kilometres away from Grossarl, has been named “municipality of the National Park”. A National Park information centre has been constructed, housing a variety of exhibitions and providing all kinds of information about the National Park.

Hiking Austrian Alps – Grossglockner

Hiking in the Austrian Alps means exploring the world of untouched nature, massive glaciers and wonderful national parks. The Grossglockner, towering to a height of 3.798 metres, is the highest mountain of Austria. Moreover, Austria´s biggest glacier, the Pasterze, lies at the Grossglockner's foot. Thanks to the construction of the scenic Grossglockner High Alpine Road, this area, previously difficult to access, can be reached easily. Before arriving at the point “Franz-Josefs-Höhe”, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view on the mountains Grossglockner and Kleinglockner, the glacier Pasterze and Johannesberg, you pass through a unique world of mountains with blossoming alpine meadows, massive cliffs and eternal ice.
